Panamas megaport plans take shape

The Panamanian government has invited the top ten container terminal operators to finalise the US$600m first phase of its megaport project. Only operators handling more than 6m TEUs annually will participate.

The project that will have an annual capacity of 2.4m TEUs in its first phase.

The new greenfield port will be sited on the west side of the Pacific entrance of the Canal, in the Palo Seco/Farfan area designated a special economic area with tax exemptions for logistics providers.

Concurrently, HPH’s Panama Ports is investing over US$200m expanding its facilities at Cristobal Container Terminal and Balboa mega port.

Cristobal, on the Atlantic coast, will itself become a megaport once all the phases of the terminal are completed. Panama Ports has meanwhile also started phase four of the Balboa megaport on the Pacific coast.
