Ireland’s Port of Cork has outlined its plans for potential development in Ringaskiddy in a bid to develop commercially and “cater for future growth”, says Denis Healy, manager of engineering services at the port.
The port is considering an extension to its existing facilities as part of its strategic development plan review from 2010.
Proposed developments for consideration include the creation of a container terminal and multi purpose berth on the east side of the Ringaskiddy Basin, an extension to the existing deep water berth and the creation of additional cargo storage areas on the west side.
In additon, the port is also looking to improve the existing road entrance to the deep water terminal to provide alternative access to the remainder of the port complex.
Mr Healy said: “In order to continue to cater for future growth within the Port of Cork and to provide efficient and cost effective port services for Munster businesses, we are currently engaged in pre-application discussions and would hope to lodge a planning application with An Bord Pleanala in the third quarter of this year.”
The port hopes the expanded facilities will help with cargo handling activities from Tivoli and City Quays. It also hopes to create opportunities for sustainable development in Cork City.
