Port of San Diego awarded Climate Leadership Award

The port was given the award, for organisational leadership, for its leadership in managing and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in internal operations and throughout the supply chain, as well as integrating climate resilience into its operating strategies.

Gina McCarthy, assistant administrator, EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation, said: “The Climate Leadership Award winners are setting the bar even higher with their outstanding actions to reduce GHG emissions that harm the environment and threaten the public’s health.”

Ann Moore, chair of the board of port commissioners, added: “It is an honour for our Green Port programme to receive this national recognition. In addition to focusing on what we can do as environmental stewards, we are collaborating with other agencies in the region and the state, as well as our tenants.”

The port’s green initiatives include a Green Business Network, which encourages port waterfront business to share sustainable business practices, Sea Level Rise Adaption Strategy for San Diego Bay, San Diego Regional Climate Collaborative, and GHG inventories of port operated areas and facilities. Since 2008, it has reduced its GHG emission by 15%.
