Private Tauranga terminal plan announced

Transportation and logistics company NZL Group is planning to establish an independent container terminal operation at Port of Taurangas Sulphur Point.

Port Strategy: NZL Group is looking to establish the first private terminal in New Zealand at Tauranga's Sulphur Point

The development, which would be the first private terminal in New Zealand, is understood to revolve around NZL triggering a contract right to reinstate the terminal previously operated by P&O Ports.

That terminal was to encompass the northern half of the Sulphur Point container marshalling area when an agreement was signed in 2003 handing occupation back to the port company.

The Port of Tauranga has indicated “surprise” at the announcement and talks are scheduled between the parties.
