Too much talk and not enough action on improving safety standards has been panned by the TT Club.
Speaking at TOC Asia in Hong Kong, TT Club’s Laurence Jones said: "We all talk about 'safety first', but it's a lot of rubbish. We do not put safety first. Container terminals are about the most unsafe industry around.”
The insurer’s director of global risk assessment told delegates that its claims’ statistics show that just 20% of the costs of all bodily injuries are a result of slips, trips and falls; while 80% are due to mobile equipment-related accidents.
"We have to focus on these kinds of things,” said Mr Jones. “All I can do is encourage terminals to use the technology out there to prevent this.”
However, he conceded that technology alone cannot improve safety standards. “Technology has to go hand-in-hand with the culture of a terminal. It's about safety awareness, toolbox talks and so on to change the culture. But you can't do that overnight."
