A ship-to-shore crane at Port Said in Egypt has been left on the potential verge of collapse after it was struck by a 368m long containership.
APL Temasek came into contact with the gantry crane and a navy barge while berthing at the Suez Canal Container Terminal (SCCT) on 27 October.
A statement from APL said: “We are currently cooperating with the relevant authorities and stakeholders in damage assessment and in investigating the incident.”
As of 30 October APL Temasek was not permitted to move due to the risk of the crane collapsing. A crane specialist was due to assess the damage and provide the next best course of action.
There were no reports of injuries or pollution but it was reported that damages could reach into the millions of dollars.
APL Temasek was the first in a series of ten 14,000 TEU containerships delivered in 2012. The series, which now consists of six vessels, is said to be the largest and most advanced in the company’s fleet.
It calls at Ningbo, Shanghai, Yantian, Singapore, Port Said, Le Havre, Southampton, Hamburg and Rotterdam on the Asia-Europe Loop 4 service.
