Seattle backs security bill

The bill would also call for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to develop a comprehensive strategic plan to enhance international supply chain security for all modes of transportation by which containers arrive in, depart from or move through the United States.

If passed, the bill will establish an Office of Cargo Security Policy to ensure accountability and co-ordination of security policies, procedures and regulations within DHS and among other agencies. Joint Operations Centres to ensure a co-ordinated, measured response to security threats and resumption of trade and commerce in the event of a threat or attack also would be established.

“The ability to get commerce moving again if and when there is an attack on our trading system is one of the most important elements of this legislation, ” says Port of Seattle ceo M R Dinsmore.

“Short of preventing an attack it is the most important step we can take to protect the global economy.”

In addition, the bill would direct US$400m a year into a federal Port Security Grant Programme.
