Proposed expansions at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach could threaten the planned development of a new mega-port at Punta Colonet in Mexico' s Baja Californian region.
Intended port operator Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) nevertheless remains interested in the project, although with the caveat that any decision to invest in the port will depend on the eventual concession agreement.The port is located 220 km south of the international border, where it is believed it could act as an alternative gateway to ports in southern California.
Meanwhile, the North American railway company Union Pacific has pulled out of the Punta Colonet Port project arguing for increased clarity in the overall process. It had formed a partnership with HPH, but has been put off by rising costs brought about by delays in issuing the concession.
