The Turkish prime minister has revealed his government is looking into a project to build a canal connecting the Black Sea with the Mediterranean paralleling the Bosporus Strait, one of the world''s busiest waterways.

Channel Istanbul will link the Black Sea with the Maramara Sea. Studies will require two years to find the optimum route, although the canal will be 25 m deep and up to 50 km long. More than 50,000 vessels pass through the existing strait every year.
