Union leader Hugo Moyano is attempting to scuttle a government plan to create a single container terminal concession at the Port of Buenos Aires as of 2020, replacing five existing concessions.
Mr Moyano has become involved in a dispute between Terminales Río de la Plata (TRP), which operates terminals 1-3, and one of its suppliers, Terminal 7. At the end of last year, TRP ceased working with T7, owing it around $68,000 for unpaid services up to October 2018 and leaving T7 liabilities of $677,000 linked to redundancy payments, since workers will be without jobs as of January 31, 2019 as T7 will be unable to sustain its current activities.
To prevent this, the port unions are organising blockades of both TRP and T7 in support of its members at a time when the central government is ramping up attempts to find a single concessionaire.
