Urgent need to optimise port calls

That was one of the conclusions of an Industry Input Workshop held to discuss and agree on global data standards for port call data, permitting machines to understand one another.

At the workshop, attendees “readily accepted” proposed standards due to most of them being based on existing International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards.

Unambiguous location identification (such as with berths and terminals) using Global Location Numbers in particular is anticipated to provide substantial value for port call optimisation.

The next step, according to a press release, is to undertake a gap analysis. Guidance is also required for ports and terminals on how to apply the standards.

The workshop saw further discussion on standard application programming interfaces, and while there was no concrete outcome, the scene was set as to what the goals should be.
