A year after it was inaugurated, Vallarpadam container terminal in the Indian port of Kochi handles virtually no transhipment traffic.

This dearth is down to a dispute with the customs authorities, who are demanding the right to inspect any containers sent to the adjacent Special Economic Zone.

This is opposed, with the argument being that they are sealed at the port of origin and do not therefore require inspection.
