In late April this year, King Mohammed VI announced that yet another mega-port is planned in the Strait of Gibraltar. It will be situated between Tangier and Tangier Med and completion is expected by 2015.
Together, the two ports will be a power centre with a handling capacity of 8.5m containers. The new port will handle an extra 5m containers a year (Rotterdam, Europe’s largest container port, currently handles 9.3m a year).
The estimated cost of the new port is €1.3bn ($1.7bn) and it will also have a terminal for shipping natural gas and a 2.5 km long pier.
