The Port of Bilbao has joined a national alliance to accelerate port electrification, advance the energy transition and expand renewable energy and shorepower across Spain’s maritime sector.
To this end, Bilbao has become a member of the Alianza Net-Zero Mar, a collaborative platform bringing together port authorities, shipping companies, logistics operators, energy firms, technology centres and public administrations.
“By joining this platform, we reaffirm the Port of Bilbao’s commitment to sustainability as a lever to promote the competitiveness of our port and the logistics, transport, industry and international trade of our hinterland,” said a spokesperson from the port.
Practical outcomes
The port emphasised that collaboration is essential to deliver practical outcomes in decarbonisation and to support the wider energy transition of the maritime-port sector.
Alianza Net-Zero Mar aims to reduce polluting emissions generated by ports and maritime transport. It aligns its work with the European Union’s regulatory framework, including Fit for 55, the European Green Deal, the European Climate Law and Spain’s Climate Change and Energy Transition Law.
Central to this effort is port electrification, including the deployment of shorepower systems that allow vessels to connect to clean electricity while berthed.
Through the alliance, Bilbao said it will contribute to the development and implementation of electrification solutions, renewable energy projects and alternative fuels, while addressing operational challenges such as OPS, energy efficiency and regulatory adaptation.
Partners will also establish mechanisms for information exchange, legislative analysis and the generation of shared knowledge on decarbonisation.
In parallel, the alliance will define technological, regulatory and economic roadmaps to achieve climate neutrality in port environments through research, development and innovation.
