Rotterdam’s Maasvlakte will unveil a new fast-charging plaza for electric freight transport this summer, developed by WattHub in partnership with Van Oord and Betuwewind.

The 5,000 m² charging hub, located near the RWG Terminal, will be the first of its kind in the area, offering 24/7 vehicle charging for lorries, heavy construction equipment and more.
“The location of this charging plaza offers opportunities for the development of charging facilities for the maritime industry. As a marine contractor, we are continuously working on making our fleet more sustainable and executing marine construction projects emission-free,” said Carlos Mollet, commercial director at Van Oord.
“This charging plaza can contribute significantly to that effort. Contributing to this push to make the region more sustainable feels incredibly good and is in line with our ambition to make a difference with sustainable solutions and contribute to a better world for future generations.”
Electrification hub
This project aligns with WattHub’s vision of expanding port electrification and enabling a sustainable transport future across the Netherlands.
It’s an initiative which follows WattHub’s 2023 Geldermalsen plaza, the world’s first charging hub dedicated to lorries and heavy construction vehicles.
With Maasvlakte being a key logistics hub, the demand for fast-charging solutions is rising. Going forward the site will also explore charging options for inland shipping and construction vessels.
“Maasvlakte is the logistics heart of the Netherlands,” said Gerben van den Berg, director, WattHub. “This fast-charging plaza is a big step toward electrifying freight transport and making sustainable logistics practical.”
