Hamburg Port Authority and Ocean Network Express (ONE) have signed a landmark agreement to supply container ships with shore power, advancing port decarbonisation goals.
The deal marks a major step in port electrification efforts, with ONE becoming the first shipping line to commit to shore power at both HHLA Container Terminal Burchardkai (CTB) and Altenwerder (CTA).
“When container ships obtain clean electricity from shore power plants, this is an important contribution to sustainable logistics – and a benefit for Hamburg,” said Dr Leonhard.
“ONE is thus making an active contribution to improving air quality.”
Significant milestone
The agreement was formalised at the Transport Logistic 2025 trade fair in Munich by Dr Melanie Leonhard, Hamburg’s Senator for Economic Affairs, Friedrich Stuhrmann, CCO, HPA and Takahiro Kikuchi, managing director, ONE
Mr Kikuchi noted the agreement as a “significant milestone” and ONE’s first use of shore power in Europe, aligning with upcoming FuelEU Maritime regulations that require shore power use at EU ports from 2030.
The Port of Hamburg has been supplying shore power to cruise and container vessels since May 2024, with full coverage across all container terminals expected by the end of 2025.
Facilities are already operational at Eurogate CTH and HHLA CTT, while installations at CTB and CTA are currently underway.
This newest collaboration strengthens Hamburg’s port infrastructure and reflects a shared commitment to reducing Scope 1 emissions and promoting sustainable shipping through port electrification.
