Statkraft is moving forward with plans for a green hydrogen facility at Hunterston in the UK, boosting alternative fuels, port infrastructure, and ammonia export capacity.

Europe’s largest renewable energy generator has signed an option agreement with Clydeport, part of Peel Ports Group, to explore the development at Hunterston PARC in Ayrshire.
“This is a very exciting new development for Hunterston – hydrogen is vital to the energy transition and we’re proud to play our part,” said Lewis McIntyre, managing director of port services at Peel Ports Group.
Growth opportunity
The proposed facility would produce, store and export green hydrogen, which will be piped to the site’s jetty and shipped as ammonia to international markets.
Mr McIntyre emphasised the project’s importance for regional economic growth and job creation, transforming a former coal terminal into a hub for alternative fuels.
Stuart Marley, Statkraft’s principal hydrogen project manager, added that Hunterston’s location and infrastructure make it an ideal site for tackling carbon emissions from heavy industries.
The facility will join several other advanced renewables projects at the site, including XLCC’s undersea energy cable factory and Highview Power’s world-leading Liquid Air Energy Storage facility.
Peel Ports Group has also secured planning permission for a GB£150 million marine yard redevelopment aimed at supporting offshore wind projects, with talks ongoing for additional alternative uses.
Overall, the Hunterston site is expected to attract GB£3.5 billion in investment and create over 5,000 jobs, solidifying its role as a major player in the UK’s green energy and alternative fuels future.
