Experts call for cybersecurity overhaul

Scott Dickerson, founder of CISO, criticised the overemphasis on legal regulations, warning that such an approach could lead to significant disruptions in supply chains. He stressed that fostering a culture of security awareness throughout organisations is essential, particularly if driven by top management.

“Without commitment from CEOs and port directors, the importance of cybersecurity will be overlooked,” he said. He urged that cybersecurity should not be relegated to technical teams alone, as the entire port administration interacts with operational technology and the internet of things (IoT).

Gadi Benmoshe, managing director of Marinnovators, pointed out the lack of IoT systems for data collection and analysis, which he considers a critical vulnerability in port cybersecurity. He advocated for the separation of operational technology networks from administrative networks to bolster defences.

Pradeep Luthria, senior partner at Saiber Innovation Technology, highlighted the necessity for improved communication regarding cyber attacks and the establishment of the Maritime Transportation System Information Sharing and Analysis Center was discussed as a means to encourage rapid information sharing.

The experts agreed that cybersecurity requires ongoing attention and development, with a strong focus on accountability and the potential of artificial intelligence to enhance detection and prevention of cyber threats.
