Liebherr and Transnet Port Terminals have entered a landmark 10-year strategic partnership to modernise and enhance the operational efficiency of South Africa’s key ports.
Under this collaboration, Transnet has already placed major orders for Liebherr equipment. Four ship-to-shore cranes are currently being assembled for the Port of Durban, while 48 rubber-tyred gantry cranes are being delivered in phases to both Durban and Cape Town terminals.
Some units are already operational, with more arriving in the coming months. The deal also includes rail-mounted gantry cranes and mobile harbour cranes to support intermodal and flexible container handling.
“Partnering with Liebherr ensures that we have access to cutting-edge crane technology and expert support,” said Jabu Mdaki, chief executive of Transnet Port Terminals.
“This agreement reflects our commitment to world-class service and keeping South Africa’s ports competitive in global trade.”
In addition a 20-year asset management programme will provide Transnet with full lifecycle support, including maintenance, repairs and parts logistics, backed by local Liebherr service engineers.
As part of this commitment, Liebherr is developing a new Competence and Distribution Centre in Durban, which includes a Technology Campus for training and innovation. The company is also upgrading its Cape Town service setup to ensure around-the-clock customer support.
