Lightweight materials for superstructures
The Danish Maritime Authority and Danish Maritime Fund have granted €700,000 to a project which aims to develop new lightweight superstructure materials for ships.
The COMPASS project aims to demonstrate it’s possible to build cheap and fireproof ship superstructures using lighter weight materials, which could ultimately replace steel.
Under the auspices of the project, DTU Mechanical Engineering, DTU Civil Engineering and DBI, in cooperation with the ferry operator Scandlines, is working on developing new lightweight materials, to include carbon fibre, which can be used for superstructures of passenger vessels.
It is hoped that the utilisation of lightweight materials could result in lower fuel consumption and therefore reduced environmental pollution.
