Luanda undertaking modernisation
Luanda ports Strategic Plan of Modernisation covering the period 2006-2010 will result in investment totalling US$130m. This will help boost service provision and improve capacity. The plan, which was drawn up in partnership with consultants Management Cayman, aims to transform the port into a regional hub within the next 10 years.
To do this, some existing cranes will require repair, whilst new ones will be purchased. In addition, infrastructure upgrades will be undertaken and quays extended.
By 2010, the port aims to handle around 5.3m tonnes compared to 4.7m tonnes at present, reflecting annual average growth in the region of 12%. Other West and South African ports are also investing heavily in their own infrastructure and are therefore seen as major competitors to Luanda.
