Mexico’s Programa Nacional de Infraestructura (PNI), or National Infrastructure Program, aims to double existing port capacity by the end of 2018.
Currently, ports have a combined capacity of 470m tonnes, up from 260m tonnes when the plan was first introduced in 2012. The target for this year is to reach 520m tonnes.
The biggest overall project is the new port at Veracruz, in which $1.5m is being invested. This will more than quadruple the port’s capacity to 90m tonnes.
The largest completed new project was at the Port of Tuxpan, which can handle 24m tonnes annually, including more than 700,000 teu and 100,000 finished vehicles.
In the second half of 2018, expansion work at the ports of Matamoros and Altamira will be completed, boosting engineered capacity from 15m to 36m tonnes.
On the Pacific coast, work at the Port of Manzanillo is on course for conclusion by the end of June, increasing capacity to 44m tonnes.
