Rio Brasil Terminal (RBT), the International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) operation at the Port of Rio de Janeiro, has strengthened its operational capabilities with the arrival of two new quay cranes as part of a long-term expansion and modernisation programme.

The investment is designed to increase vessel handling efficiency and prepare the terminal for the growing number of larger container ships serving the east coast of South America.

Rio Brasil Terminal improves vessel handling capability with new quay cranes

The new cranes are capable of handling vessels up to 400 metres in length overall and carrying as many as 20,000 teu, enabling faster cargo operations, improved berth utilisation and reduced turnaround times.

Their arrival increases RBT’s total fleet of quay cranes to six and represents another milestone in the terminal’s modernisation strategy, which is scheduled for completion in 2029.

“These new assets will contribute to increased operational efficiency and further enhance the quality of service we provide to our customers,” said Roberto Lopes, chief executive of RBT.

“They represent an important development in our ongoing expansion and modernisation program, which is targeted for completion in 2029.”

Container traffic through the Port of Rio has risen significantly since 2023, driven by growth in Brazilian foreign trade and increasing deployment of larger vessels on regional routes. RBT’s investment programme is intended to ensure the terminal can accommodate these market trends while maintaining high service levels.

In addition to acquiring modern cargo-handling equipment, the programme includes the unification and expansion of storage yards, reorganisation of operational areas and the introduction of advanced technologies and automation systems to streamline terminal processes.

The upgrades are expected to strengthen the Port of Rio’s role within Brazil’s logistics network and help ease capacity pressures experienced at other ports around the country.

Once the expansion is completed, RBT’s annual handling capacity will increase to 750,000 teu, further establishing the Port of Rio as a key logistics gateway for Brazil’s southwest and midwest regions and supporting the continued growth of the country’s international trade.
