APM Terminals has officially delivered its new container terminal at the Port of Suape in Pernambuco, marking a major milestone in Brazil’s logistics infrastructure as the facility enters its final stages before commencing operations.
The US$350 million investment, known as APM Terminals Suape, is set to become Latin America’s first fully electrified container terminal.
Designed to increase the Suape Port Complex’s container handling capacity by 55%, the facility will initially process up to 400,000 teu annually, strengthening trade links between northeast Brazil and key markets across Latin America, North America, Europe and Asia.
“More than a new port asset, the terminal expands capacity in the northeast, connects Brazil to major global trade routes and raises operational standards in the region through a fully electrified facility,” said Daniel Rose, managing director of APM Terminals Suape and Pecém.
According to a study by A&M Infra, Navarro Prado Advogados and APM Terminals, the project could generate up to R$4.8 billion (US$930 million) in additional exports, contribute around R$4.9 billion (US$950 million) to Brazil’s GDP and create more than 43,000 jobs throughout foreign trade-related value chains.
Brazilian vice president Geraldo Alckmin described the development as a transformative project for the country. “The delivery of this new terminal is a leap forward for the infrastructure of Pernambuco in the northeast, and for Brazil’s competitiveness,” he said.
“It means reduced costs, greater integration with the world, more opportunities for agribusiness and industry and increased job creation.”
The project reinforces APM Terminals’ long-term commitment to northeast Brazil, complementing its established operations at the Port of Pecém and supporting the region’s growing integration into global trade networks.
