Malta Freeport Terminals is advancing its Terminal 2 expansion

David Magro

Malta Freeport Terminals is advancing its Terminal 2 expansion, known as the “Squaring Off Project,” to bolster its position as a premier Mediterranean transshipment hub. This €56 million initiative involves reclaiming 30,000 square meters of land to extend the North Quay by 176 meters and the West Quay by 195 meters, enhancing the facility’s capacity to accommodate the next generation of mega containerships exceeding 400 meters in length and carrying up to 24,000 TEUs.

A significant milestone was achieved with the completion of the first caisson base structure. These watertight structures are essential for underwater construction, allowing workers to excavate and build below the waterline. The caisson was gently submerged into the sea by its hosting barge, and concrete walls were cast before it was floated into position. Concrete production is ongoing on-site, with an independent testing laboratory ensuring adherence to quality standards.

The expansion project is progressing rapidly, with seven of the eleven caissons already submerged. Once completed, the terminal’s capacity will increase from 3.6 million TEUs to 4 million TEUs annually, improving operational efficiency and reducing vessel turnaround times.
