On 15 - 17 October Malta will take the spotlight as it hosts the 20th GreenPort Congress, with Valletta showcasing how bold ambition and collaboration can transform a port into a model of sustainability.
At the heart of this success is the Onshore Power Supply (OPS) project - now the largest installation of its kind in the Mediterranean. What began in 2020 with cruise ships has quickly expanded to cargo, ro-ro vessels and the shipyard, proving that OPS can be the backbone of an entire port ecosystem. Backed by EU funding and driven by Infrastructure Malta, Transport Malta, Malta Freeport and Enemalta, the project has already delivered measurable results: over 70 vessel connections in its first full year and nearly 3.7 million kWh supplied, dramatically cutting emissions and boosting air quality.
Valletta is also positioning itself as a commissioning hub where operators can test and certify OPS systems, while Malta Freeport is investing in electric container handlers and new OPS tenders to extend electrification even further. The strategy is clear: to place Malta at the forefront of port decarbonisation in Europe and beyond.
As Norbert Grech, Board Member of EOPSA and Senior Manager for Ports & Yachting at Transport Malta, explains: “We are proud to say that we are sharing our knowledge with other ports, other people, other key stakeholders. Under one umbrella you can find a good network of people who can exchange knowledge, share expertise and move the industry forward collectively.”
This pioneering vision will be on full display when GreenPort Congress 2025 runs alongside DTF: Decarbonising the Future in Valletta. Together, the events will bring policymakers, port authorities, technology providers and industry leaders under one roof to explore the future of port electrification and sustainable power.
For delegates, Valletta offers more than a conference backdrop. It is a living case study of transformation, showing how leadership, collaboration and innovation can deliver rapid, tangible change. Don’t miss the chance to see it for yourself this October.
