Panama based IT consulting company, Advanced Consulting, and Israel based optical character recognition (OCR) supplier, have been awarded a project by the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP) to implement OCR on 53 cranes spread over four terminals in Panama.
There is currently no automated system in place to audit data at the Panamanian terminals. The AMP believes that an automated system will provide additional support for payments made by terminal operators, in compliance with the government’s ‘Contraloria’ requirements.
The 53 crane OCR systems will capture, recognise and read the number unique to each container during discharge and load operations, without the need for human intervention, as they are handled by the ship-to-shore cranes. This will enable the AMP to record and examine real time information based on the movement of containers, which is currently only provided on a monthly basis.
