Liebherr has secured an order for seven ship-to-shore (STS) gantry cranes for the new Sparrows Point Container Terminal (SPCT) in Baltimore, marking a significant milestone for both the terminal development and the crane manufacturer’s growing presence in the US.

The cranes have been ordered by Tradepoint Atlantic and Terminal Investment Limited for the 168-acre (68 ha) container terminal currently under development at Sparrows Point, a former industrial site being transformed into a major logistics and trade hub.

Liebherr has secured a seven-crane order for a Baltimore terminal expansion, boosting regional trade capacity

Once operational, the facility is expected to increase the Port of Baltimore’s container handling capacity by approximately 70%, supported by an estimated US$1.2 billion investment.

“This project will add capacity and efficiency not only for the local community, but for the wider Mid-Atlantic and Midwest regions,” said Ammar Kanaan, chief executive of Terminal Investment Limited.

“That is why developments such as Sparrows Point are so important for the future of the US supply chain.”

The seven cranes will play a central role in terminal operations, enabling the handling of ultra-large container vessels and allowing two ships to be worked simultaneously. Designed for the latest generation of container ships, the cranes feature a 70-metre outreach, 25-metre backreach and a lift height over rail of 51 metres.

“[The deal] reflects the scale of investment and ambition behind Sparrows Point and reinforces Liebherr’s ability to deliver high-performance crane solutions for some of the most significant terminal developments underway globally,” said Declan O’Sullivan, managing director – Sales at Liebherr Container Cranes.

Tom Caso, vice president at Tradepoint Atlantic, said Liebherr’s experience with major terminal projects was a key factor in the partnership.

“Their experience in delivering high-performance and dependable crane solutions for major terminals gives us confidence as we develop Sparrows Point into a key gateway for global trade,” he said.

The order brings the total number of Liebherr STS cranes ordered in the US market since 2020 to 27, further strengthening the company’s footprint across North America.
