The $5.25bn extension of the Panama Canal will be undertaken through the placing of eight contracts.

The Panama Canal is powering ahead with expansion plans

Two of these will cover dredging work and five excavation work, while an eighth will cover the design and construction of new locks between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

The first of these contracts, which was awarded to the local construction company Constructora Urbana SA, was for excavation work. A second contract is due to be awarded by the end of October, although there is no timetable for the remaining six.
