Paranagua piles on capacity

Peter Bingham, who has been in Iraqi as special advisor for the CPA explained that on his arrival last year his initial views were that the ports had deep water and were generally in reasonable condition with good quay surfaces and warehouses.

Latin America’s leading grain export port, Paranagua, is undertaking a $48.14m programme aimed at doubling its capacity. A new area, Cais Oeste, is under construction while the existing quay line is being lengthened from 2,600 to 3400 metres, effectively creating space to accommodate three additional vessels. The work, which will take 24 months to complete, will also see all 16 existing berths dredged to a minimum depth of 12 metres, given that currently this can vary from 8 to 12 metres. Finally, 1,100 metres of quay is being totally renovated.
