Capacity increase approval for LNG terminal

Australian Industrial Energy’s (AIE) request to increase the capacity of the Port Kembla Gas Terminal has been approved by the New South Wales government. AIE lodged a modification to its existing development consent for its LNG terminal in October 2019.

“The Modification to the original Development Consent will satisfy the market need for more gas during the cooler winter months,” said AIE. “It allows an increase in throughput, as well as an increase in the number of LNG cargoes able to be received at the Terminal each year, without modifying the Terminal design.”

The modification will increase the number of annual LNG cargoes received at the terminal from 26 shipments of standard-sized vessels (170,000 cubic metres) to up to 46 shipments of variable sized vessels to reflect the variability in demand.

AIE said now the modification has been approved, it will now work with its customers to finalise supply contracts.

“Securing these customer arrangements, as well as finalising the last remaining post-consent management plans, will enable the project to make its Final Investment Decision and commence construction,” it added.

Development consent for the terminal was awarded in May 2019.
