Co-hosts Rotterdam Shortsea Terminals and the Port of Rotterdam are both sustainability leaders

Conference co-hosts Rotterdam Shortsea Terminals (RST) and the Port of Rotterdam are both leaders in sustainable innovation as they play a central role in enabling fast, reliable, and well-connected maritime transport across Europe.
The largest dedicated European hub for short-sea and feeder shipping, RST was recently recognised as having achieved a 97.6% reduction in CO2 emissions between 2018 and 2025 with an award of its 4th Lean & Green Star.
RST said the cut in emissions had been enabled by actions from HVO 100 and fleet renewal, to LED lighting, insulation and solar panel installation, and a new sustainable programme (2026-2028) was already underway.
Arno Storm, RST’s CEO, said: “Looking forward, initiatives such as HarbourHUB and investments in infrastructure for more sustainable energy consumption show that we don’t wait for change to happen but are taking the lead. Meanwhile, we keep investing in our people and building strong relationships. After all, sustainable progress is based on joint effort. Our ultimate goal for 2030 is net zero emissions.”
Meanwhile the Port of Rotterdam, Europe’s largest seaport and a key global logistics gateway, is also making its mark with 11 shortsea shipping lines on course to embrace Secure Chain, aimed at increasing the security and reliability of logistics chains.
Four shipping lines have gone live with Secure Chain – CMA CGM Short Sea Lines Intra North Europe, Boluda Lines, Mann Lines and Sea-Cargo Agencies – and will now only release containers arriving in Rotterdam at RST and Matrans Rotterdam Terminal securely and reliably via the new method.
Seven other shortsea shipping lines, including WEC Lines and BG Freight Line, are taking part in a pilot and will switch to Secure Chain as soon as they have completed their preparations. The ultimate aim is for the entire shortsea sector in the Port of Rotterdam to embrace the Secure Chain.
