The ELIRE Group has been awarded funding under the Innovate UK CMDC6 programme (Strand 2) for a feasibility study on its pioneering Hydrogen Floating Power Hub, scheduled for first deployment in Greenwich in autumn 2025.
The Integrated Floating Power Hub is a scalable, off-grid energy platform that combines hydrogen storage, renewable power and smart microgrid systems to deliver zero-emission energy to both ocean-going and inland vessels.

“This project marks a pivotal moment in clean energy infrastructure,” said Luke Jenkinson, founder and chief executive of ELIRE Group.
“By replacing fossil-fuel dependent shore power, we aim to cut port-based emissions by up to 80%, eliminating over 500,000 tons of CO2 in the next decade.”

Backed by partners including Ricardo plc, Sealand Projects, Schneider Electric and the University of Strathclyde, the study officially begins on 1 September.
“Hydrogen is a critical player in the energy transition,” said Rajeev Verma, chief technology officer of ELIRE Group. “With falling production costs and rising investment, it’s poised for large-scale deployment.”
Nathaniel Frithiof, business development lead, emphasised safety and adaptability. “Our floating design allows safe hydrogen storage offshore, reducing risks and accommodating evolving regulations,” he said.
The hub integrates hydrogen, solar and biofuel-powered microturbines, offering up to 5 MW of clean energy. This setup supports not just vessels but also port operations, particularly in areas with limited grid infrastructure.
“The River Thames is an ideal starting point for a hydrogen economy,” Verma added.
Derek McGlashan, vice president of sustainability, agreed. “This is a future-proof solution aligned with the UK’s Maritime 2050 vision,” he said.
As ports worldwide seek sustainable solutions, ELIRE’s power hub could become a global model for clean, flexible maritime energy.
