APL Kaoshiung recently set a new productivity record at the port loading and discharging an average of 164 containers per hour over 21 hours from a single vessel. This record exceeds the ports standard of 55 containers per berth hour by 198%.
VECON LPNR and CNR systems will be installed on the six berths at the Busan New Port North Container Terminal, whilst in Hong Kong AVT will provide the River Trade Terminal, which caters for trade with the Pearl River region, with a ‘Gate-Out Processing Automation solution’ by installing VECON-CON on 5 out-lanes at the terminal.
“Navis SPARCS helped us increase productivity and improve operations, ” says Tomy Hong, terminal manager at APL Kaohsiung. “Its terminal operating system helped optimise our processes, improve productivity and increase flow throughout the terminal with no glitches or bottlenecks.”
Hong says the terminal will increase throughput by 4-5% in 2005 to approximately 1.38m TEUs, for a combined two-year increase of 180,000 TEUs since it implemented the Navis terminal operating system (TOS). “The Navis system reduced planning time, increased throughput and adapted quickly to the volume of vessel scheduling, which opened more berth space and ultimately increased our productivity.” APL also reduced its operational staff cost by 15% in the three years after the Navis SPARCS and Express software were implemented.
