There’s a new AI platform that provides real-time awareness of utilisation rates and cargo flows

With productivity, environmental and economic pressures mounting, ports around the world are turning to the Internet of Things (IoT), advanced analytics and machine learning to boost operational efficiencies.

Working together to mesh edge, AI and 5G technologies, Awake.AI and Intel are looking to catapult port operations into the computer vision era.
The new platform based on Intel technology uses machine-learning models to detect objects in the port yard using sensors installed in the port area and automatically provides real-time awareness of utilisation rates and cargo flows.
The organisation of the flow of cargo and global supply chains continue to be a great challenge.
Mr Tenovuo said that potential benefits from using the platform include better use of existing capacity, reduced port area emissions, accurate real-time prediction of arrivals and departures and optimised port calls subsequently leading to time and cost savings.
“For example, Lidar sensor data, often combined with other sources of data, can be used to optimise the arrival and departure of landside traffic. Sensors can detect congestion, enabling re-routing port gate and inner area traffic,” said Mr Tenovuo.
