Jørn-Erik Hausmann to share findings of port’s in-water hull cleaning pilot project

Jorn-Erik Hausmann

The Norwegian port of Bergen has emerged as a global leader in environmental management, and its Head of QHSE & Sustainability will bring his experience and expertise to the 21st Greenport Congress in October.

Jørn-Erik Hausmann has worked in compliance and risk and environmental management for more than two decades, and since 2024 he has led the Port of Bergen’s pilot project the Green Shipping Programme (GSP) on in-water hull cleaning with capture of biofouling and waste.

The project has brought together ports, regulators, technology providers and the shipping industry to evaluate practical solutions that reduce environmental impacts while maintaining operational efficiency. The GSP’s experiences and findings have also informed the ongoing development of regulatory frameworks, as well as national and international policy, for biofouling management.

At GreenPort Congress – being held at Portsmouth International Port, UK, 7-9 October 2026 – Hausmann will present the Bergen project, sharing the key lessons learned and discussing how collaboration between ports, authorities and industry can accelerate the development of safe, practical and environmentally responsible approaches to hull cleaning.

His presentation, The importance of hull cleaning with collecting to avoid alien species, will take place as part of Session 3: Pollution, sediment, and comprehensive risk management, on the afternoon of the opening day.

Hausmann will be joined by Małgorzata Żochowska, Business Manager at Race for the Baltic, who will highlight the Dry Bulk project aimed at cleaner dry bulk handling, and Richard Haine, Managing Director of water quality experts Frog Environmental. Mark van der Veen, Director of the Graduate School of Business at the University of Amsterdam, will be the session moderator.
