The Port of Milford Haven has taken delivery of a new state-of-the-art pilot vessel, marking a significant step forward in its operational capability and long-term strategy.
Named Llanion, the vessel arrived in Welsh waters following a successful delivery voyage from the Netherlands, where it was built by Next Generation Shipyards. Designed in collaboration with Camarc Design and BMT, the vessel features a modern pilot-specific hull, self-righting capability and enhanced safety systems to support operations in challenging conditions.
“The building of Llanion is a project we are extremely proud of,” said Dirk Keizer, technical director at Next Generation Shipyards.
“In close collaboration with the Port of Milford Haven and the other partners, we have delivered a vessel that excels in safety, performance and reliability.”
The new addition comes amid a period of heightened operational activity at the port, including pilot vessel trials, emergency response exercises and ongoing vessel traffic management improvements.
These initiatives reflect a continued focus on safety, efficiency and resilience across the Milford Haven Waterway, one of the UK’s busiest energy ports.
“Working closely with our partners and our own technical teams, we now have a vessel that reflects the highest standards of design, safety and operational capability,” said Tom Sawyer, chief executive at the Port of Milford Haven.
“Llanion will play a key role in supporting the safe and reliable movement of vessels on the Milford Haven Waterway for years to come.”
The vessel is expected to enhance pilot transfer operations, ensuring crews can board and disembark vessels safely while minimising delays and improving overall port efficiency.
The investment also aligns with the port’s broader ambitions to support the UK’s energy transition. As a major energy hub, Milford Haven is actively exploring opportunities in cleaner fuels, including hydrogen, while continuing to modernise its infrastructure and operations.
