The software intelligence company AMLab has secured two contracts at the Port of Rotterdam to deploy LiDAR sensor systems across 34 automated cranes, enhancing safety and performance.

AMLab will deliver advanced 3D LiDAR technology across a combined fleet of Automated Rail Mounted Gantry cranes, supporting port automation through improved positioning, real-time data and operational consistency.
“Modern container terminals are under constant pressure to improve both safety and operational performance,” said Shanil Herat, managing director of AMLab.
“High-accuracy sensing technologies such as 3D LiDAR are becoming a key enabler for achieving this.”
Pin-point accuracy
The deployments will include AMLab’s Target Positioning Systems and Stack Profiling Sensor System, enabling automated cranes to operate with centimetre-level accuracy while eliminating traditional pause-and-scan processes.
The LiDAR technology provides full scan coverage across gantry and trolley movements, removing blind spots and enhancing situational awareness.
This supports safer working conditions for operators, maintenance teams and landside drivers, while also delivering automated data insights for more informed decision-making.
By integrating real-time 3D sensing, the systems allow automated cranes to adjust spreader movements dynamically during travel, improving landing precision and reducing unnecessary motion.
The Stack Profiling Sensor System continuously builds a live height model of the container yard, enabling smoother crane operation and more predictable cycle performance.
This new contract reinforces growing demand for port automation solutions that combine LiDAR technology with existing infrastructure.
AMLab’s approach, including advanced data processing algorithms and simplified installation, enables terminals to modernise efficiently while maintaining operational continuity.
