The Port of London Authority has signed a deal with Kongsberg Norcontrol to replace its vessel traffic services (VTS) equipment.
This deal is a key part of its Thames Vision 2050 programme to create a future-proofed, resilient port control centre at the UK’s largest port.
“This is a multi-million-pound scheme and will provide London VTS with state-of-the-art equipment, enhancing and improving our operational performance,” said PLA’s director of marine operations, Steven Clapperton.
Trade at the port on the tidal Thames is expected to rise from 55 million tonnes per year to 78 million by 2050.
The VTS is essential to allowing operators to respond swiftly to traffic situations, helping improve the safety and efficiency of navigation and protect the marine environment.
“This PLA vision aligns with our funded research and development roadmap in terms of helping our customers and protecting the environment,” said KNC’s sales manager, Mike Sheard.
“I’m particularly excited because the contract includes an extensive managed service support package ensuring the PLA will benefit from our forthcoming innovations including autonomy.”
The PLA’s Marine Centre Transformation Programme is a multi-million pound and multi-disciplined scheme to transform London VTS operations. The scheme is due to complete in 2026.
