In response to heightened security threats such as cyberattacks and extreme weather, the Port of Hueneme, California recently led the 2025 Coastal Trident Security Exercise, a two-day event focused on strengthening emergency preparedness and security coordination.
Held at the FATHOMWERX lab, the exercise brought together port tenants and workers, business leaders, Naval Base Ventura County and more than 20 public safety and emergency agencies.
“Port operations are critical, and we have to stay prepared for whatever may come our way,” said Jess J. Ramirez, president of the Oxnard Harbor District. “These exercises help us prepare for real-world events that could threaten our cargo, our infrastructure and our community.”
This year’s event focused on Maritime Security (MARSEC) level changes and the increasing threat posed by drones to port infrastructure and vessel operations.
Day one featured a live MARSEC change scenario involving drone surveillance and attack simulations. Day two hosted a hands-on Unmanned Aircraft System Workshop, allowing agencies to share and develop drone-based response capabilities.
The event also raised awareness of evolving security risks and improved regional response coordination.
“With the increasing sophistication and accessibility of drone technology, identifying vulnerabilities and testing response strategies is more important than ever,” said Kristin Decas, chief executive of the port.
“We remain committed to ensuring the Port of Hueneme remains one of the most secure and resilient seaports in the nation.”
