Santos develops huge expansion programme . . .

Santos Port Authority (Codesp) is to develop a major new operating area at Barnabe Bagre as a public-private partnership in tandem with the Federal Government. This will expand this particular zone of the port to 6 million square metres incorporating no fewer than 50 berths.

First, a $1.2m feasibility study and a $1.5m environmental impact study must be completed before a tender can be issued.

A second expansion area in the port, at the Embraport terminal, will result in $400 million of additional private investment. A third project, to expand the general cargo terminal, is also under way.

$55m is being spent on the construction of two berths and an expansion of the overall surface area.

In order to facilitate these plans, changes need to be made to the internal road infrastructure of the port. Codesp is lobbying the government’s accounts committee to release funding as soon as possible to enable construction of a perimeter road to go ahead on the right bank of the port of Santos. Constructora OAS has already been awarded a contract for the work, although this has been challenged by another consortium, given its ?20.96m value.
