Environmental Protection Engineering (EPE) and Wilhelmsen Ship Management have been championing eco-friendly solutions during a seminar at this year’s Posidonia exhibition.
The seminar, called ‘Hazardous materials on board: Inventory and Management’ was aimed at tackling the IMO 2009 Hong Kong Convention and the newly ratified EU regulations that will enforce green ship recycling in certified shipyards over the next few years.
In future it will be mandatory that all new vessels develop an inventory of hazardous materials (IHM) onboard and also for the recycling yard to prepare a generic ship recycling plan outlining the procedures for handling disposal of hazardous materials.
The seminar covered topics such as preparation of inventory of hazardous materials, hazardous materials and wastes management, green ship recycling and lay-up solutions.
Key note speakers at the seminar were Fotis Ploumitsakos, naval architect and mechanical engineer, EPE and Rakesh Bhargeva, head, lay-up, green recycling and IHM services, Wilhelmsen Ship Management.
