In 2025, Coastlink supporter - Logistics UK - released the UK Logistics Network: Waterborne Freight, highlighting inland waterways as a vital yet underutilised part of the UK’s transport infrastructure. David Wells OBE, Chief Executive of Logistics UK, noted that “the strategic role of inland waterways and coastal shipping must be integral to national infrastructure planning.”
This topic sits at the heart of Highland Shipping Company’s strategy. George S Macleod, Senior Executive at Highland Shipping Company, will join the discussion to share insights on port-centric logistics and how inland waterways can offer a sustainable alternative to road transport. Macleod has played a leading role in advancing modal shift initiatives, particularly in supporting the logistics infrastructure behind major renewable energy and infrastructure projects in the Highlands. He will also outline innovative marine solutions, including the use of the Caledonian Canal to reduce HGV traffic and decarbonise supply chains, while maintaining efficiency for large-scale projects.
Taking place on 6-7 May 2026, Coastlink attendees will gain a first-hand look at how these Highland initiatives are paving the way for sustainable logistics, renewable energy support, and a decarbonised supply chain.
