Lithuania’s Klaipėda Port is ramping up its offshore wind energy ambitions with a major port infrastructure upgrade.
A contract has been signed to reconstruct quays on the Smeltė peninsula, ensuring smooth assembly, handling and transportation of wind turbines.
“The signing of the quays reconstruction contract signals the readiness of Klaipėda Port to take an active part in the development of the offshore wind energy,” said Algis Latakas, CEO of Klaipėda State Seaport Authority.
”The reconstruction of quays is not only the infrastructure upgrade, but also a contribution of Klaipėda Port to the new generation energy projects. We are laying the foundations that will allow for offshore wind energy to become a significant part of the country’s energy sector.”
Quay reconstruction
The contract, awarded to UAB Tilsta, involves reconstructing approximately 453 metres of quays at the former International Ferry Port.
These upgrades will enable high-load capacity (40 t/m2) for handling offshore wind turbine components. Additionally, dredging will be carried out to deepen the quays from 10 to 12 metres, ensuring the port can accommodate large-scale wind energy operations.
With an expected completion date at the end of next year, the €36.6 million project should generate new economic opportunities, create highly skilled jobs, and boost shipbuilding, repair and service industries.
The upgrade follows the agreement signed between Klaipėda State Seaport Authority and Klaipėda Stevedoring Company KLASCO back in May 2022 which was a strategic move to support Lithuania’s offshore windfarm expansion.
This project will enhance the port’s ability to service windfarm construction and maintenance, positioning it as a key hub for Baltic Sea renewable energy projects.
