The approval enables the port to safely receive, store and distribute batteries for major renewable energy projects. It also advances the port’s port diversification strategy while supporting growing demand for renewable energy logistics.

“This isn’t just a milestone for Port of Newcastle, it’s yet another way we’re helping customers deliver the infrastructure NSW needs to support a more diverse energy mix,” said Craig Carmody, CEO, Port of Newcastle.

“These are complex cargoes that require specialist handling, purpose-built infrastructure and the right safety systems. We’ve invested in that capability because we see where the market is heading and what our customers will need.”

Market diversification

The capability has already supported AGL’s Tomago Battery, Origin Energy’s Eraring Battery and the Bellambi Heights Battery Energy Storage System, representing around 1.7GW of dispatchable capacity and 6.8GWh of energy storage. 

The announcement coincides with NSW Government approval of the Stratford Pumped Hydro and Solar Project, reinforcing Port of Newcastle’s role as a logistics gateway for renewable energy infrastructure.

As projects progress from planning to construction, the port will provide specialist handling for battery systems and other complex project cargo.

Demand for the new battery storage capability has already increased, prompting further investment in port infrastructure, including a A$36 million berth extension at the Multipurpose Terminal to accommodate larger vessels and expand project cargo capacity.

Alongside its established handling of wind turbine components, these investments reinforce port diversification, enabling the port to support Australia’s energy transition while maintaining its position as a major gateway for traditional bulk commodity exports.
