As it celebrates its 21st anniversary, the GreenPort Congress 2026 will bring the port community together at a potentially pivotal time.

The annual gathering at Portsmouth International Port, UK, from 7–9 October, comes amid increasing pressures on the sector to decarbonise while facing growing global operational challenges to efficiency and competitiveness.

Looking ahead to his role as Chair in 2026, Dr. Mark van der Veen, Director of the Graduate School of Business at the University of Amsterdam, observed: “At a critical point for the sector, GreenPort Congress 2026 will drive practical discussion and collaboration, with Portsmouth offering an outstanding real‑world backdrop.”

Portsmouth International Port itself plans to become one of the UK’s first zero-emission ports by 2050 and to achieve net-zero port operations by 2035, and is positioning itself as a “living laboratory” for new technologies and sustainable solutions.

Mike Sellers, Portsmouth International Port’s director, said: “Portsmouth is looking forward to hosting this year’s GreenPort Congress, an important event in the industry calendar.

“We pride ourselves on being a leader in sustainable and innovative maritime operations, and take our role as a city-owned port seriously by making sure we work with the community and customers who share our values.

“The event in October will take place in our carbon-neutral terminal, one of the UK’s most sustainably advanced buildings, and delegates will be given an insight into the green technologies we have here at the port.”

Meanwhile, the GreenPort Congress will, as it has done for the past two decades, continue to provide a meeting place to learn, discuss and share knowledge on the latest in sustainable environmental practice.

Confirmation of that has come in many recent testimonials:

“This is a great event, bringing effectively together colleagues from the Port Industry and beyond and giving us the opportunity to discuss initiatives and technologies and exchange relevant experiences aiming at addressing the sustainability challenges of the maritime and port industries. A most valuable Congress.” – Sotirios Theofanis, Executive Director, MARLOGMIND PC Greece

“GreenPort Congress is a brilliant opportunity to discuss common challenges in the port sector as well as learn about best practice in our industry.” – Megan Turner, Port of Dover

“The range of subjects covered and the expertise of the speakers, as well as delegates, made for a great congress.” – Fred Felleman, Port of Seattle

“Class meeting of environmental port professionals. Informative and very personal - always a good fixture.” – Malte Siegert, NABU
