Day 2 followed with even further insights into port sustainability projects as we dived into the following:
- 9th Annual Environmental Report: Anaelle Boudry of ESPO reported on their environmental initiative, referring to 83 ports in 21 countries. Of which, 82% were members of the TEN-T network. Boudry noted that the top 3 environmental priorities of the port sector for 2024 were climate change, energy efficiency and air quality.
- Infrastructure Development for Multimodal Services: HAROPA Port covered their focus on improving their intermodal transportation options to strengthen links with it’s hinterland, and Port of Trieste covered their railway integration and the work being done to take over 370,000 trucks off the road each year.
- Investments: Willem Slendebroeke of MTBS shared their insights into Green Bunker Facilities, sharing a case study in South Africa. The project’s capex was over 2 billion USD and driven mainly by the renewables production. While Mirova shared some sustainable blue economy solutions including their private asset platform: an ecosystem fully dedicated to impact and real assets.
- The EU TEN-T Coordinators: Focused on the revised TEN-T Guidelines, highlighting strategic priorities, funding mechanisms, and the development of a sustainable, interconnected European transport network. Their session covered many of the priorities in the European transport space including EMS and maritime transport, transport funding and financing and European Transport Corridors.
- Alternative fuels: Various case studies were presented showing the variety of solutions and fuels available in the maritime space. PlugPower presented on hydrogen fuel cells and how they can provide onshore power for grid constrained ports, while North Sea Port discussed their mission to facilitate fuel shift and electrification in logistics.
Day 2 was packed with valuable information and opportunities for collaboration, making it a productive and engaging day for all attendees.
