After three years of collaboration a German project to better manage network capacity and rail freight through the use of AI has concluded.

The project was led by Kombiverkehr KG and supported by Deutsche Umschlaggesellschaft Schiene-Straße, Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, INFORM, KombiConsult, Technical University of Darmstadt and VTG.

A new innovation uses AI to optimise train loading and network planning, boosting efficiency for terminals and ports

Funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital Transformation and Government Modernisation, KIBA – short for Artificial Intelligence and Discrete Loading Optimization Models for Enhanced Utilization in Combined Transport – promises to bring significant operational improvements.

The system optimises the allocation of load units to wagons, shortens crane travel distances, and minimises handling time – all while ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

“With KIBA, terminal operators gain the ability to make intelligent loading decisions at the push of a button,” said Dr Rafael Velásquez, director optimisation & integration at INFORM which participated in the project.

The result: fewer re-handlings, faster turnaround times, and better use of existing infrastructure.

“The AI-based train loading models ensure every wagon is used to its full capacity – both in weight and length – while reducing crane movements. This translates into shorter dwell times and more reliable operations,” explained Heiko Krebs, managing director of Kombiverkehr KG.

For terminals and ports, this means not only lower costs and increased reliability but also a competitive edge as rail becomes more attractive and efficient.

Dr Eva Savelsberg, senior vice president at INFORM, highlighted the broader impact. “This is more than just software – it’s a leap toward smarter, greener logistics,” she said. “It shows what’s possible when academia and industry innovate together.”

With KIBA now moving into practical testing, terminal operators are expected to be among the first to benefit from the system’s optimisation capabilities – paving the way for more sustainable and efficient freight handling.
