Wallenius Wilhelmsen has officially begun operating the Port of Gothenburg’s car terminal, now renamed the Gothenburg International Auto & RoRo Terminal (GIART), marking a strategic expansion of the company’s terminal and logistics network in Scandinavia.
The Port of Gothenburg is the leading vehicle-handling hub in the Nordic region, with a strategic location connecting Scandinavia to global automotive markets across Asia, North America, Africa, Australia and northern Europe.
The newly established, independent company will provide full RoRo and terminal handling services, with phased upgrades planned to expand value-added processing capabilities such as pre-delivery inspection.
“We are very optimistic about Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s ability to continue developing the car terminal at the Port of Gothenburg,” said Göran Eriksson, chief executive at the Port of Gothenburg.
“The company has presented a strong business plan and has credibly demonstrated how they will achieve the volume targets they have committed to and operate a competitive terminal with a customer-centric approach.”
Wallenius Wilhelmsen says it has positioned GIART as a neutral, open-access hub serving multiple carriers and customers, supporting its ambition to act as an integrated supply chain partner in the region.
“When we were awarded the contract, we talked about a strategic milestone for our network and a shared ambition to co-create a Scandinavian hub,” said John Felitto, chief operating officer, Logistics Services at Wallenius Wilhelmsen.
“Today, that vision becomes reality. With GIART now fully operational, we are ready to deliver reliable, efficient and innovative services for all.”
The 12-year contract provides long-term operational stability and a foundation for continued investment. GIART features two quay positions, 240,000 square metres of terminal space, rail connectivity and PDI facilities.
In total, 251,000 new vehicles were handled at the Port of Gothenburg in 2025, underscoring the terminal’s role in regional automotive trade.
