POLA honours clean ships
A total of 26 shipping and cruise lines have been honoured by the Port of Los Angeles (POLA) for their participation in its Vessel Speed Reduction Programme (VSRP), which aims to cut emissions.
VSRP honourees included China Navigation, CMA CGM (America) LLC, Hapag-Lloyd AG, Maersk Line, Mitsui OISK Lines Ltd, Princess Cruises, Tesoro and Norwegian Cruise Line, among others.
Geraldine Knatz, executive director, POLA, said: “We applaud our shipping and cruise lines for embracing our vision for a greener, cleaner port. Our customers’ voluntary participation in these important emission reduction programmes greatly contributes to better healthier air quality in and around San Pedro Bay.”
Since its establishment in 2001, the VSRP has resulted in significant decreases in diesel particulate matter, sulphur oxide and nitrogen oxide emissions in and around the port.
For the first time, the POLA also honoured 12 ship carriers for their voluntary participation in the Environmental Ship Index (ESI), and international clean air programme that rewards ocean carriers for bringing their newest and cleanest vessels to the port.
Honoured for their participation in the ESI programme were Evergreen Line, Mediterranean Shipping Company, Nippon Yusen Kaisha and Yang Ming Marine Transport, among others.
